Ireland is a country where people have lived since around 6000 BC, but
its origin isn´t known. Around 700 BC the Celts came to the island and
they brought their avanced culture with them. The Celts were very fierce
and defeated the native people easily. Around 400 AD, Celts decided
they needed slaves to work their land; they sent ships across to
Britain, captured people from there and brought them back to Ireland.
This happened to Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
The
Vikings invaded Ireland in the 9th century. They built settlements and
these later became important cities like Dublin, Cork and Limerick. They
soon became part of the people of Ireland. In 1169, the English invaded
Ireland and also integrated into the Irish people.
In 1607 James I (the king), sent English farmers to Ireland to take the land from Catholic farmers.
In
Ireland you can visit a lot of places, for example Newgrange, which is an ancient temple in County Meath, and is the most visited archeological
monument in Ireland. It´s famous because the shortest day of the year
the sun shines through the hole and light the floor of the passage.
Another
thing to visit is The Book of Kells. It´s a beautiful madieval
manuscript containing the four Gpspels of the New Testament.
Another
place is Blarley Castle. It´s a medieval fortress. People come to see
the famous Blarley Stone, that is a block of dark stone built into the
walls of the castle. It legend is, if you kiss the stone, you will speak
with great eloquence.
And the last place is Jeanie Johnston Famine
Ship. It´s a replica of a ship between 1848 and 1855 which made 16
journeys between Ireland and North America.
